Shirvan is one of the ancient historical regions of Azerbaijan, and the Shirvan Carpet School has been famous for its rich and complex patterned compositions since the Middle Ages. Carpets woven in cities and districts of Shirvan region such as Shamakhi, Meraza, Agsu, Kurdamir belong to the Shirvan school. This school includes 25 compositions. It also includes Salyan carpets, which are similar in their artistic and technical characteristics. Shirvan carpets are characterised by their complex images and a large number of people, birds, and floristic images. In most cases, the background of the middle field is dark green, dark blue, and sometimes dark red. The decor of the middle area consists of "curling" or "covering" elements from an older period.
